Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and in other ways prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime in achieving their full potential. The values we strive to instill are based on those found in the Boy Scout Oath and Law: SCOUT OATH On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. SCOUT LAW A Scout is: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Program Summary

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in 1910 and was chartered by the United States Congress on June 15, 1916. The first recorded meeting to organize the Longs Peak Council was held on February 16, 1924. The Longs Peak Council serves nine counties (Boulder, Larimer, Weld, Morgan, Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Yuma, Washington) in northeastern Colorado; Albany, Platte, Goshen, Niobrara and Laramie counties in southeastern Wyoming; and 11 counties (Kimball, Cheyenne, Banner, Morrill, Box Butte, Sioux, Dawes, Sheridan, Garden, Deuel and Scotts Bluff) in western Nebraska. The Council is divided into six districts. Each district is led by a volunteer District Chairman who also serves on the Executive Board. Three Scout Service Centers and one mini-store provide fully stocked Scout shops that meet the needs of Scouts and leaders. The Farr Service Center in Greeley, Colorado serves as the Council’s administrative headquarters. For 100 years the Boy Scouts of America has helped America’s youth grow into responsible adults. Scouting’s programs build character, train youth in leadership, teach them the responsibilities of citizenship, and encourages physical, mental and spiritual fitness. Scouting provides real benefits to all youth and is an especially powerful tool to serve ethnic minority and disadvantaged youth. Scouting builds self-esteem, provides positive adult role models and provides positive recreational activities. Its small group structure provides the positive peer support that young people need. In Scouting’s programs, youth ages 6 to 20, are participating in positive, challenging and fun activities led by quality adult role models. The skills taught and experiences gained are reinforcing achievement in school. The program emphasizes healthy lifestyles free of substance abuse. Each program level emphasizes appropriate youth leadership as determined by a Scout’s developmental level. A child’s natural desire to be a part of a small, supportive group is fulfilled in Scouting units, and destructive gang activity is discouraged.
