Client Story
| TJ, our youngest, was born extremely prematurely. The Lord spared him many of the birth defects that doctors told us were common to those who survive such an early birth, but he was always small for his age, and we were told that learning delays could become more pronounced as he proceeded through school. TJ is brilliant in many areas, but he has significant challenges in a few. For most of his life we had him at a school that seemed appropriately aware of his challenges. In high school, however, TJ’s struggles were disregarded. The school refused to acknowledge the problems, much less help us, and we felt forced to withdraw him during his junior year.
We considered Dayspring our best option, and we approached the school with some desperation. The semester had already begun. TJ’s situation was a challenging one and Dayspring was not obligated to deal with our problems. And yet, administrators and teachers went out of their way to work with us as a family and with TJ as a student. Mr. Rice was the specialist that TJ had never had, giving intensive direction and patient encouragement. He went above and beyond his job to help us find helpful resources outside the school. Katie Stewart tracked TJ’s progress not only in her own classes, but in all of his classes. Christie Roberts gave TJ extra attention outside of school hours. Janie Colgate faithfully kept us in touch whenever TJ was falling behind. For the first time in his life, TJ wanted to talk about his classes when he got home from school. The classes he talked about most were his Bible classes. Other teachers took interest in TJ as a person and helped him quickly find a new belonging away from the only school he had known before. Just as significantly, other students welcomed TJ as one of the group, displaying a maturity beyond their years. And when TJ got into some trouble, administrators handled it with both high standards and a long-range view of the health of the students involved. I could not have imagined being this impressed and grateful for the people of Dayspring. We would have settled for finishing a high school degree. Dayspring far exceeded our hopes academically, relationally and spiritually. We would have been grateful for a school that passed, but Dayspring earned an A-plus. When TJ graduated in May, he left with more friends, a richer understanding of his identity in Christ, and expectations of moving on to college. And as parents, we wish he had been with Dayspring for all his high school years. In Christ and our partnership in the gospel, David July 2010 |
