January Story: Weld Food Bank's Backpack Program

Weld Food Bank’s Backpack Program has received funding from the Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County's Littler Youth Fund. This program provides children at risk of hunger over the weekend with a nutritious bag of food every Friday. This is an important program to help these kids have the same opportunities to succeed in school and achieve their dreams. During the 2015-2016 school year, the Weld Food Bank distributed 22,114 nutritious food bags to students across Weld County.

This program has a direct impact on students taking part in the program. In one of the schools that were served, a teacher talked about his student, Tyler, who came to school every Monday appearing tired and disinterested. The student’s grades were declining. This led the teacher to ask what was going on. Tyler told him there was very little food at home on weekends, and his empty stomach made it hard to concentrate. Through the Backpack Program, he began receiving food over the weekend to make sure he was ready and able to learn every Monday.
